Why are newer data centers moving toward cloud computing? Scalability.

Data centers are evolving to incorporate the basic design of cloud computing for one compelling reason: flexibility. The cloud computing architecture allows each application to have the resourcs it needs -- and only the resources it needs.

Cloud environments are based on the principle of on demand: resources are pulled in when they're needed. When one application is idle or experiencing relatively low usage, it does not hog computing resources. Instead, the processing power, storage and bandwidth are free for use by other applications in the cloud.

The result is a lower cost data center. Servers, network devices, and even power is not wasted on applications that are not in use.
